The resounding victory of Claudia Sheinbaum as president of Mexico in this Sunday’s elections has received applause from a large part of the international community on both sides of the Atlantic. A wave of presidents and political leaders from Latin America and Europe have conveyed their congratulations to the standard bearer of Morena, the party of Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Leaders and former leaders of the Latin American left have been the first to celebrate the victory of the official candidate, even before the official figures were released. “Progressive”. “Engaged”. “Friend”. These were some of the adjectives with which they welcomed the president-elect after learning of her victory. The National Electoral Institute (INE) confirmed at the stroke of midnight Sheinbaum’s victory with 59.5% of the votes, according to the rapid count, more than 30 points away from the opposition candidate Xóchitl Gálvez. Sheinbaum will be the first female president of Mexico, a historical milestone that has been celebrated by political leaders around the world.
The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, received Sheinbaum’s victory with a message and a photograph with the Morena candidate on his social networks: “Mexico elected a progressive as the first president in its history. It is a triumph for the Mexican people and for their democracy. Congratulations to my friend Claudia Sheinbaum, together we will work to see Latin America united and progressing,” she declared Morena’s victory almost at the stroke of midnight. Hours before, the vice president of Colombia, Francia Márquez, was one of the first political figures to congratulate Sheinbaum through her social networks: “We receive with great satisfaction the results of the presidential elections in Mexico, which represent renewed hope for the region . We congratulate and hug Claudia Sheinbaum, the first female president of Mexico. The ties of freedom and justice that unite our people date back to historical leaders such as General Jorge Orlando Melo and Benito Juárez. We look forward to a highly successful six-year term, working together to strengthen the change towards social justice in Mexico and throughout the region,” she published on her X account.

As soon as the INE confirmed Sheinbaum’s victory, the secretary general of the Organization of American States (OAS) conveyed his congratulations to the former head of government of the country’s capital and extended the hand of the OAS to work together on democracy , human rights, comprehensive development and security between countries. Along these same lines, the Puebla Group, a forum that brings together progressive political leaders from Latin America, also joined in the congratulatory messages for the electoral victory.
The president of Bolivia, Luis Alberto Arce, called for extending arms of collaboration between Mexico and Bolivia with this next Government. “We salute all the Mexican people for their democratic vocation and broad participation in the electoral process. We are convinced that the relations between our peoples will be strengthened to continue walking the path of brotherhood, cooperation and solidarity,” he wrote on his social networks. Hours before, former Bolivian president Evo Morales had congratulated himself on this victory along with a video in which we can see how they chat, hug, and Morales gives Sheinbaum a gift. “A nice meeting with the brand new elected president of Mexico. As always, she is very humble and very committed. Claudia is Latin America.”
Already in the early hours of this Monday, the president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, joined the congratulatory concert: “We saw an extraordinary demonstration of civility and democracy this Sunday in Mexico, a great participation in the presidential elections. I congratulate this noble people, its elected president Claudia Sheinbaum, the Morena Party, the PT and the Social Movements. Congratulations to President López Obrador, who is a great leader of Mexico and our continent. This is a great victory for the Great Homeland. I hug you! Long live Mexico! “He said.

Before the INE released the official data of the quick count with the victory data for the Morena candidate, the president of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, also came forward and extended her congratulations to Sheinbaum, even announcing that she had already had spoken by telephone to work in coordination with Latin America and the Caribbean: “As the first female president of Honduras, I extend my sincere congratulations to the first elected female president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, for having achieved a resounding electoral victory at the hands of the people of Mexico and our friend López Obrador.” The official account of the presidency of Costa Rica was added to this congratulation.
The president of Guatemala, Bernardo Arévalo, was another of the Latin American leaders who congratulated the Morenista in advance—before the first official count by the INE—for winning the presidency of Mexico. “Mexico elected its first president. Together with her, a people strengthened by democracy and the hope for a better future celebrates,” he said. He also pointed out that he had already established communication with the candidate to express his willingness to collaborate: “Remember that you have in Guatemala an ally willing to work together to enhance solidarity, respect for life and the general prosperity of our people.”
The former president of Argentina, Alberto Fernández, has also celebrated the victory of the Morenista. “I have had the privilege of being able to hug who will be the new president of this beloved country, our dear Claudia Sheinbaum. A progressive woman will continue in Mexico the enormous task that my beloved López Obrador began. “Latin America celebrates,” Fernández has written. A few hours later, the former Argentine president, Cristina Kirchner, congratulated Sheinbaum and Morena.
From Europe, the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, has emphasized that Mexico will have a woman as president for the first time in its history. “Congratulations, Claudia Sheinbaum, on your election. For the first time in its history, Mexico will have a woman at the head of the Presidency. We will continue working to strengthen relations between Spain and Mexico,” she declared on her social networks in the early morning. Yolanda Díaz, Spanish vice president and Minister of Labor, also celebrated the victory: “Congratulations for continuing to advance in the Fourth Transformation and new rights for the Mexican people.” Moments before, the former Spanish Minister of Equality, Irene Montero, also sent congratulations to the Morenoista: “Happy for the election of Claudia Sheinbaum as the first female President of Mexico.
