The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) expects to organize a permanent mission at the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP). This was announced on August 31 by the director general of the agency, Rafael Grossi.
“This is one of the most important things that I want to do, and I will do it,” he is quoted as saying. Reuters.
According to him, the agency’s mission is going to the war zone. She received “clear guarantees” of security, Grossi said.
The head of the IAEA also specified that the mission intends to spend several days at the ZNPP. The priority of the mission will be its communication with Ukrainian specialists, Grossi concluded.
On the morning of August 31, the convoy of the IAEA mission moved out of Kyiv towards the Zaporozhye NPP. The time of her arrival at the nuclear power facility is not given.
The day before, the head of the military-civilian administration of the Zaporozhye region, Evgeny Balitsky, noted that the program of the mission during the visit to the nuclear power plant is designed for one day. Its purpose will be to get acquainted with the work of the station, he noted.
A group of 14 IAEA experts arrived in Kyiv on August 30 ahead of a visit scheduled this week to the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant. The mission is led by Grossi.
The visit comes amid UAF shelling of a nuclear facility and growing fears of a potential nuclear accident. In particular, on August 29, as a result of an attack by the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the territory of the Zaporozhye NPP, the roof of a special building was pierced, in which fuel for reactors is stored.
Zaporozhye NPP was taken under the protection of Russian forces as part of a special operation to protect Donbass. As Vasily Nebenzya, Russia’s permanent representative to the UN, noted on August 11, the withdrawal of the Russian military from the facility could turn into a disaster, since Kyiv could use the station for monstrous provocations.
The special military operation to protect Donbass, the beginning of which Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on February 24, continues. The decision to hold it was made against the background of the aggravation of the situation in the region due to shelling by the Ukrainian military, in connection with which the authorities of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics turned to Moscow for help.
