It seems that even Michiel de Ruyter received a decent 19 cents per kilometer for his travel expenses – that’s how long the employer’s tax-free kilometer allowance has been standing still. And that while fuel prices are only rising. Nonsense, fortunately the majority of the House of Representatives now sees that. An increase is planned, but only before 2024. As far as the Netherlands is concerned, the kilometer allowance may already be increased in 2022, we suspect.
Will the kilometer allowance increase in 2022?
Thats not sure. Fuel taxes are already going down this year – in April even – so apparently it is possible to make quick decisions. “According to VVD member Eelco Heinen, it can already happen,” it reports AD. It is not yet known how much the tax-free kilometer allowance will increase. Earlier plans were for an increase to 21 cents in 2024 and 23 cents in 2025.
Can the employer already give more mileage allowance?
Sure, if the boss wants it, the mileage allowance can already be increased. When we talk about the 19 cents, we are talking about the tax-free kilometer allowance. This is the amount on which no taxes are paid. More may indeed be paid, but then suddenly tax has to be paid, which makes the kilometer allowance even more expensive. And most employers don’t want to do that.
What would be a fair tax-free mileage allowance for 2022?
The Business Drivers’ Association reports: ‘In the past year the petrol price has risen by 0.90 euros per liter, this fact alone means that an average employee has lost 5 cents per kilometer extra for his business kilometers.’ This would mean that the kilometer allowance should rise to 24 cents as early as 2022.
In 2020, the association was already talking about 33 cents per kilometer for a larger car, such as a BMW 3-series Touring. That was before the absurd fuel prices of today. We dare to assume that the compensation will not rise to such heights, but a minimum of 25 cents seems justified to us. We’ll see how it turns out.
