The Minister of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, Elma Saiz, has announced that the Council of Ministers will soon approve the new immigration regulations that will speed up the legalization of immigrants and streamline the processes, as ‘elEconomista.es’ has been reporting. This was announced in the presentation of the OECD report on the outlook for international migration, a document that highlights that Spain is the fifth developed economy that incorporated the most foreigners in 2023.
The minister has boasted that Spain is “redoubling efforts” to “strengthen” the regulatory framework for migration “to provide legal security to both companies and migrants themselves, facilitating their integration into the labor market and into Spanish society. with utmost respect for human rights”.
The next regulation, which must only pass through the Council of Ministers, plans to strengthen legal immigration channels through new roots, such as family reunification or the regulation of temporary jobs.
The Executive will give more weight at roots as formula that people who are already in Spain and are not authorized to work can do so. The new regulations are expected to support a kind of newly created socio-training or socio-laboral roots.
To put the roots in context, At the end of 2023 there were 210,334 people with a residence permit thanks to this figure77,000 of them were doing it for the first time. Social and family roots are the figures that predominate when it comes to allowing foreigners to reside. 90% of people with initial authorization for social roots are employed and there has been a 159% increase in people affiliated with this formula.
The OECD report indicates that Spain is the fifth developed economy that incorporated the most foreigners last year, with 364,000 people. Specifically, arrivals increased by 12.3% compared to 2022, when 324,000 arrived. The report indicates that last year only the United States (1.1 million migrants), the United Kingdom (746,900), Germany (692,700) and Canada (471,700) exceeded the figure.
Will bet on collective contracting at originclosely related to circular migration to cover seasons of greater activity in certain sectors. This circular migration formula has already been previously defended by the Migration Department.
These reforms, in line with EU directives, are designed to respond both to the demands of the Spanish labor market and to the rights and needs of migrants.
“We have promoted labor inclusion policies to facilitate migrants’ access to sectors with a labor shortage, along with training and job training programs. In addition, we are working on a Multicultural Integration and Coexistence Plan. A strategy for the coming years which will serve as a road map for the social and economic inclusion of migrants in our society,” Saiz added.
