The Government has moved to try to unfreeze the negotiations with the Popular Party for the distribution of migrant minors. During the inter-ministerial immigration commission, the ministers involved shortened “send a communication to the European Union”, with the aim of “detailing the measures activated and coordinated so far in the management of the migration crisis and to activate the support that are accurate in the immediate future.” With this initiative, he intends for those of Alberto Núñez Feijóo to resume meetings with the central and Canarian Executives to promote the reform of the Immigration Law, given that the reason given for abandoning the process was the alleged lack of request for help from the EU for migration policy.
As detailed by the Minister of Territorial Policy, who has chaired the commission, once this letter is sent, a meeting will be called between the Government and the PP, together with the governments of the Canary Islands and Ceuta, to negotiate a solution for the minors. unaccompanied migrants. “When this new letter is sent to the EU requesting to coordinate new measures, the PP will no longer have excuses not to sit down to negotiate and support this initiative in the Cortes Generales,” said the head of Territorial Policy, who has defended that the requests aid from the central executive to the European institutions has been constant in recent years.
During the last interministerial commission on migration, the first vice president and Minister of Finance, María Jesús Montero, the second vice president and Minister of Labor and Social Economy, Yolanda Díaz, and the heads of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, also participated; Youth and Childhood, Sira Rego; Inclusion, Social Security and Migrations, Elma Saiz; and Social Rights, Consumption and Agenda 2030, Pablo Bustinduy, as well as representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation.
After the refusal of PP, Junts and Vox to overthrow the parliamentary process of the reform of the Immigration Law that would allow the creation of a mandatory system for the distribution of migrant minors, the Government, the Canary Islands and the PP sat down again at the end of October to reach an immigration agreement that would unlock the solution for these kids. However, after several meetings, the PP announced on October 5 the unilateral breakdown of the negotiations.
The spokesman for the Popular Party in Congress, Miguel Tellado, announced the suspension of the talks: “Once the response from the European Commission is known, confirming that Spain has given up asking for help from the EU, as “as the PP requested, they suspend the negotiations until the Government reconsiders and seeks community support.” The ‘popular’ referred to a letter sent by Ursula von der Leyen to Dolors Monserrat, vice-president spokesperson for the Group of the European People’s Party. In the letter, the president of the European Commission, appreciates the concern that the popular people show about the migration drama that is being experienced in the Canary Islands and where she states all the things that the Commission is already doing in immigration matters. At the end, a pro forma paragraph is added stating that “the Commission is ready to continue assisting Spain and the Canary Islands in their efforts to manage this difficult situation”, but it was not rejected that Spain had rejected said aid.
While negotiations are not progressing, more than 4,400 migrant minors remain in the Canary Islands, many of them living in emergency centers that do not meet the appropriate conditions for their care.
