The subject was designed by the socialist government of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero and branded by the right as “indoctrinating”
The Minister of Equality, Ana Redondo, has stated that the elimination of the subject of ‘Education for Citizenship’ meant losing «a historic opportunity to know a different present today. The subject, designed by the socialist government of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, was branded by the right as “indoctrinating” and was suppressed, as an entire subject, by the government of Mariano Rajoy.
«There are moments in history when we must give a greater boost to equality education, because there are moments in history when we have lost the opportunity. I always say that when in Spain we stopped betting on education for citizenship, more than ten years ago, we lost a historic opportunity to get to know a different present today,” he stated.
This was stated in statements to the media minutes before inaugurating in Avilés (Asturias) the ‘International Coeducation Meeting: Equality in coeducation, equality in life’, which is being held at the Niemeyer Center at the initiative of the Ministries of Equality. and Education, and in collaboration with the Principality and the City Council of Avilés.
In that sense, Redondo has highlighted that the coeducation is not a methodological alternativebut rather it is “education in constitutional values” and “an absolutely essential issue for a consolidated democracy and a democracy free of violence.” For this reason, he has highlighted that more and more centers are betting on it “as a way of generating free and equal citizens, men and women who have to live together without violence in peace.”
