In the Council of Ministers of last October 5, the head of the Department of Equal Opportunities, Elena Bonetti, approved the “national LGBT + strategy”, a floor binding that between now and 2025 is proposed to launch some reforms in defense of sexual minorities. These include the establishment of parental leave for same-sex parents, incentives for companies hiring transgender people and rules against the discrimination of homosexuals in collective bargaining agreements. But also the university “double booklet” for transgender people who will also see their kind of election recognized on the documents, as well as training courses for policemen and public security agents, and measures to combat the “negative effects of ‘conversion treatments’ for LGBT + minors “.
Bonetti explained today in an interview with Republic that the strategy was requested by the European Union “also for the purpose of funding for specific projects”. A report by the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights photographs a negative picture for Italy as regards LGBT + rights: 62% of the sample fear repercussions by taking their partner by the hand in public, only 39% freely express their identity, compared to a European average of 47%. One in four respondents said they have experienced discrimination in the workplace, 32% have experienced harassment and 8% have been physically assaulted in the past 5 years. Of these, only 16% denounce. Being binding for the next three years, the “national LGBT + strategy” will affect the new executive which will take office in a few weeks and will be led by Giorgia Meloni. In the Brothers of Italy, the approval of the document was not welcomed.
Eugenia Roccella, former undersecretary and former spokesperson for the Family day, elected to the ranks of FdI, protested: “Not only is it an incorrect move, but it is also senseless. The national strategy serves to apply the EU rules in Italy, launched in 2020. The government has had 2 years, doing it now, a few days after the changeover, is just a publicity stunt, because no commitments can be made for the government following”. And she assures: “The new center-right majority is ready to pick up the document and rewrite it all over”.
