After almost ten days of controversy, crossed statements and political confrontations between administrations, the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration has reported that after weeks of prospecting, “for technical reasons”, the decision has been made to discard the facilities of the Ciudad Real airport to build a center for migrants, the fifth of its kind in the territory.
“Despite the increase in arrivals compared to last year, the current situation and the projection for the last quarter make us work directing resources towards other alternatives,” says the ministry headed by Elma Saiz.
The Ministry argues that constant surveys are carried out throughout the territory in order to find facilities that are part of the Humanitarian Care and International Protection System, a “flexible” model according to needs, which offers resources to alleviate first arrival points. , such as the Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands or the south of the peninsula.
For this reason, the statement affirms that it will continue with the prospecting work, “for which interterritorial solidarity and the support of the various administrations are invaluable”, as has been happening until now, to face the common challenge of migration.
The CAEDs are Emergency Reception and Referral centers to provide care to migrants in situations of maximum vulnerability. They are open centers where they are given initial humanitarian care and, after several interviews and a study of their needs, vulnerabilities and family networks, they are transferred to more appropriate resources for each particular case with the aim of facilitating their inclusion.
Chronology of a rejection
The controversy hit the media on October 14 when the news was leaked that the Ciudad Real airport could dedicate its facilities to locate a center to house adult migrants coming, fundamentally, from outside the Peninsula, an extreme at which the Government of Castilla-La Mancha was “surprised”.
That same day, the central government admitted that the possibility of creating a reception center for migrants at the Ciudad Real airport was being studied, but stated that it was “one more” among many other locations that were being analyzed.
Quickly, the City Council of Ciudad Real and the Provincial Council, as well as nearby towns, also showed their rejection of the installation of a center of these characteristics at the Ciudad Real airport.
An opposition that was also shared by the Chamber of Commerce and the Spanish Network for Immigration and Refugee Assistance when considering the airport infrastructure “an isolated space” without integration or interaction options for the people who are located there and without a time solution. .
Faced with these criticisms, the Minister of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, Elma Saiz, assured that there was no decision made regarding the opening of an Emergency, Reception and Referral Center for migrants at the Ciudad Real airport.
The Government of Castilla-La Mancha, already last Sunday, warned the Ciudad Real airport that it would be inspected and even reserved its land for expropriation. Faced with this warning, Ciudad Real International Airport (CRIA), the company that manages the Ciudad Real airport, defended that it met “all the conditions” to welcome migrants and attacked the Government of Castilla-La Mancha for its “excessive and excessive reaction.” “all unjustified.”
