American actor James Caan, who in his decades-long career starred in iconic films such as The Godfatherpassed away last night at the age of 82.
His relatives reported this on Twitter. “The family appreciates the outpouring of love and condolences and asks everyone to respect our privacy,” the star’s official account read.
The actor, who married and divorced four times, leaves behind five children, including actor Scott Caan, known for the series. Hawaii Five-0† As James always did in life, the family closes the tweet with the words “end of tweet.”
Caan started his career in the 1960s and made his definitive breakthrough with his role of Sonny Corleone in The Godfather (1972), alongside Marlon Brando and Al Pacino, which earned him an Oscar nomination. His character is riddled in the film by a seemingly never-ending series of bullets during a scene considered one of the most memorable in movie history.
Even decades later, complete strangers still approached him with the advice to stay away from toll booths, according to the AP news agency, since ‘Sonny’ came to his end there. Caan also played the part briefly in a flashback scene in The Godfather IIreportedly asked for and received the same amount of money as for his major role in the first film.
In the decades that followed, he showed himself to be a versatile actor, with roles as a sergeant in the war film A bridge too far (1977), a role alongside Barbra Streisand in the musical funny ladya lead role in the psychological Stephen King thriller misery (1990) and comedic roles in lighter films like elf (2003).
Between 2003 and 2007, he starred in the kitschy glamor series for four seasons Las Vegaswhich was also shown in the Netherlands and was repeated for a long time.
