The four new magistrates of the Constitutional Court promise the position before the King

The four new magistrates of the Constitutional Court Laura Díez Bueso, Juan Carlos Campo, César Tolosa and María Luisa Segoviano have promised or sworn their position in the inauguration ceremony held this Saturday morning, in the La Zarzuela palace, before the king. A ceremony that was also attended by the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez; the president of the Congress of Deputies, Meritxell Batet; the president of the Senate, Ander Gil; the president of the Constitutional Court, Pedro José González-Trevijano; the alternate president of the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ), Rafael Mozo; the Minister of Justice, Pilar Llop, and the General Director of Legal Security and Public Faith, Sofía Puente.

The plenary session of the Constitutional Court unanimously gave the placet for its incorporation into the body of guarantees for jurists on Thursday, after Díez Bueso and Campo were appointed by the Government in November; and Tolosa and Segoviano were elected by the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) this Tuesday, after a serious institutional crisis. “The Constitutional Plenary unanimously verifies that the four jurists proposed by the Government and the CGPJ meet the requirements demanded by the Constitution,” the court reported by protocol.

The four magistrates have attended the act dressed in black, with the exception of Díez Bueso, who wore a dark-colored dress. The progressives Díez Bueso, Campo and Segoviano have promised the position. While Tolosa, the only one of the magistrates proposed by the conservative members of the CGPJ, has sworn.

Once the ceremony was over, Felipe VI greeted the authorities and the new members of the Constitutional Court, with whom he has been photographed. Then the President of the Government and the rest of the authorities joined to complete a great family snapshot. The four new magistrates replace the outgoing González-Trevijano; the vice president, Juan Antonio Xiol, and Antonio Narváez and Santiago Martínez Vares.

The new magistrates will take office on January 9. Then the new stage of the Constitutional Constitution will start with a progressive majority, after nine years of a conservative majority. Among other decisions, the guarantee court parked during this time the debate on the abortion law, endorsed cuts in the rights of the PP governments, stopped the independence challenge and limited the legislative capacity of the communities.

For his part, Pedro Sánchez also congratulated the citizens this Saturday on the new year 2023, via Twitter. “We are ending 2022 in which, despite the international context, Spain has managed to grow and advance, always protecting those who need it most. For a 2023 in peace, with prosperity and social justice. Happy New Year! ”, the President of the Government wished through the social network.
