The Flag flies this Sunday in the capital’s Zócaloraised by the military in the midst of a verbal confrontation between members of the National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE) and members of the “Pink Tide.”
The raising of the Flag, scheduled for 6:00 a.m., was hindered by the CNTE sit-in at the Plinth.
Early in the day, the absence of military personnel for the official event generated uncertainty, while at the other end of the square, CNTE teachers were preparing their own event.
Fences, fences and more fences
The first square of the city woke up surrounded by fences and traffic, restricting access to the Plaza de la Constitución. The entrances were kept closed until 8:00 a.m., under the surveillance of police and elements of the National Guard.
Minutes before 8:00 a.m., the situation became more tense. The authorities removed the fences that prevented access to the Zócalo, while the members of the “Pink Tide” were directed from one side to the other by the police, with the promise of allowing them to enter after 8:00 a.m.
In contrast, at the entrance to the Zócalo on Avenida 20 deNovember and Pino Suárez, the situation was different. CNTE teachers controlled accessengaging in discussions with citizens who were trying to enter through this entrance.
Flag raised, between shouts and the National Anthem
Finally, and despite the tensions, the military managed to raise the National Flag in the Zócalo, while shouts from both sides could be heard. The CNTE teachers hurled insults, while the members of the “Pink Tide” sang the National Anthem.
The raising of the Flag this Sunday in the capital’s Zócalo reflected the division that exists in this public space, the scene of the protests of both groups. The military presence and the verbal confrontation between the parties are a sign of the tension that prevails in the area.
It is expected that throughout the day, concentrations of the CNTE and the “Pink Tide” will take place in the Zócalo, maintaining an atmosphere of tension and surveillance by the authorities.
Marko Cortés calls for national mobilization
The national president of the PAN, Marko Cortés Mendoza, called for participants to participate in the rallies that will take place this Sunday, May 19, in the Zócalo of Mexico City and in more than one hundred cities in the country.
Under the slogan of defending freedom and democracy, Cortés urged citizens to unite regardless of the color they want to wear, in a demonstration of strength and rejection of the current government.
“This Sunday we have an appointment, the citizens who believe in freedom and democracy, who believe in institutional counterweights, those of us who know that things in this country are not going well and want a change, those of us who are already tired of the destruction and authoritarianism that Morena represents, those of us who reject a State election like the one we are experiencing,” declared the PAN leader.
Marko Cortés assured that, from north to south and from east to west, Mexican society has awakened and will mobilize en masse on election day.
He stressed that this citizen participation will be decisive and that neither President López Obrador nor Morena will be able to stop it.
“Whatever they do and whatever they say from the Moreno government, the citizens are marching and will give the electoral victory to Xóchitl Gálvez on June 2. Citizen action against the autocrat has no turning back. It will stop the destruction of the country,” said Cortés Mendoza.
