The works to improve accessibility, new cycling infrastructure and traffic calming actions between the Pronillo (Los Osos) roundabout and Camilo Alonso Vega, corresponding to the first phase of General Dávila’s Master Plan, will be completed in spring. This was stated by the mayor, Gema Igual, who visited the works this Thursday in which she was accompanied by neighbors. During his speech, he stressed that these actions (planned in 6 phases) have a investment of 3.4 million euros and will “transform” this area of the city.
In this regard, he highlighted that, after the completion of the work, there will be a space with more trees and green areasas well as the area will have 28 more parking spaces, a new bike lane, larger pedestrian areas, traffic calming and the incorporation of the Mendicouage Park to the promenade.
EXPECTED DEADLINES
As the councilor recalled, the works are carried out by the SIEC company, and are carried out “in the planned time frames” over a period of time. 700 meter stretchwith a total area of 20,576 square meters, although it has been specified that there will be a “small” delay due to restoration works on a façade on a section of the street. Likewise, he has detailed that the works carried out so far have made possible the opening to public use of several sections of sidewalks “already renovated” and the installation of bus stops in their final locations.
In addition, approximately 75% of the demolition of existing sidewalks and the planned pipelines (sanitation, lighting, signage and telecommunications). As for the tiles, around 50% of them have already been placed in granite, as well as 70% of the new projected curb and half of the planters. Likewise, all the “small” encounters with the flower beds of the urbanizations have been resolved and all the trees that were in good condition have been transplanted, the mayor explained.
MOST FRIENDLY CITY
“With this action, we continue to promote a friendlier city, betting on urban improvement and quality of life of Santander residentswherever they live, with a view to ensuring that their closest environment favors neighborhood coexistence, sustainability and promotes neighborhood commerce and hospitality,” said Igual.
He also recalled that it is a project “demanded” by neighbors“necessary and very well accepted” both by residents and by the educational communities of the surrounding centers and the companies and businesses installed in the area. The objective of the works, he highlighted, is the “complete” transformation and “revaluation” of the road, adapting the space to promote a “proximity” city and the promotion of active mobility, -both cyclist and pedestrian-, as well as the calming of road traffic in favor of pedestrian and recreational spaces.
The performance has a grant of 2,306,533 euros from European fundswithin the framework of the second call for the aid program for municipalities for the digital and sustainable transformation of urban transport and mobility.
PEDESTRIANZATION
On the other hand, the actions contemplate the improvement of the pedestrian route on both sidewalks, removing obstacles and barriers such as curbs, closures and plantingswith a general rearrangement that will differentiate the transit space from the living space. Thus, the work will “optimize” the permeability of the urban fabric by incorporating spaces such as Mendicouague Park, whose closures will be removed.
It will also improve pedestrian safety by moving pedestrian traffic away from the edge of the road, taking it inside the pedestrian space, through traffic calming actions with, for example, the establishment of one lane for each direction of traffic. In addition, the design will be “functional, safe, comfortable, attractive and adapted”, even contemplating areas of summer shade.
BIKE LANE
This project incorporates the implementation of a bidirectional bike lane with a width of 2 meters, with its own lighting and parking for bicycles; and that will run the entire stretch of the walk along the south bank.
The Residential areas will total 4,073 m2 and traffic sidewalks will reach 4,967 m2. The trees will increase from 172 to 207 units, the parking area will increase by 28 spaces and 94 benches will be placed, tripling the current ones. The action will include the renewal of services and the maintenance of the 4 bus stops.
