This Monday the Film Academy released a statement to show its solidarity with victims of sexual violence. On Friday EL PAÍS revealed that a film student, an employee of one of Carlos Vermut's productions and a worker in the cultural sector were allegedly attacked by the filmmaker. Vermut has been a candidate four times for the Spanish film awards: for best direction and best script for Magical Girl, in 2015, and in the same categories in the last edition by Manticore. The Academy has not wanted to comment until today, although EL PAÍS already asked the institution for its opinion last Friday at noon.
“Sexist attitudes, abuses of power and violence against women, which can take very different forms, are present transversally throughout society, and the audiovisual sector is no exception,” the Academy states in its note. “This institution, which represents all film professionals in our country, wants to condemn any abuse and reaffirm its total rejection of such acts, as well as its solidarity and support for the victims who report such abuse and the need to continue reporting any situation of this type.”
Finally, the most important institution of the Spanish film industry wanted to underline its commitment to “the safety of women and gender equality”, something that “the group of professionals that the institution brings together demands and demands.” “The Academy will make visible at the Goya Awards ceremony, which will be held in Valladolid on February 10, the demand that sexual violence and abuses of power have no place in the world of cinema or in Spanish society as a whole. ”, the institution now emphasizes. “At the Goya gala we will also have a protocol to prevent and combat any possible case of sexual and/or gender aggression and harassment.”
On the other hand, viewing of Magical Girl (2014), which was scheduled to be accessible until next May. According to sources from the entity, “RTVE's management team has asked RTVE Play to withdraw it.” The film, on the other hand, can be seen on Filmin, whose editorial director, Jaume Ripoll, sent all his respect and support to the victims via networks on Friday, clarifying that both Diamond Flash (2011) as Magical Girl They would still be available on their platform. The same happens with the other two Vermouth lengths: a Who will sing to you Netflix subscribers can access it, now Manticore those of Movistar+.
In the last TVE film evaluation table, at the end of December 2023, the entity decided to acquire the antenna rights of the new Vermut project underway, Tomorrow you will be my death, with production from Movies of Tomorrow AIE, Lucero Dilms, La vida Dr and Sábado Movies. It is one of the 75 projects and/or films for which TVE has acquired the right to broadcast in 2023.
The Feroz Awards gala, held last Friday in Madrid, produced a cascade of statements and messages on networks and on the red carpet against sexual violence. From the Minister of Culture, Ernest Urtasun, and the Vice President Yolanda Díaz, to actresses like Aitana Sánchez Gijón, Jedet, Carolina Yuste or María Botto; and actors such as Hugo Silva, Alberto Ammann, Berto Romero or Brays Efe, and filmmakers such as Elena Martín Gimeno, Clara Roquet, Juan Antonio Bayona or Isabel Coixet, expressed their solidarity with the women who were allegedly attacked by Carlos Vermut. But these displays of support contrasted with the silence on the matter that was maintained on the stage of the Feroz awards gala.
