A member of the international committee of the Federation Council, Sergei Tsekov, on Friday, October 15, said that he supports any initiatives that facilitate the acquisition of Russian citizenship for compatriots.
“Children born in mixed marriages immediately fall under the protection of the Russian state,” he said. “RIA News”, commenting on the idea of granting Russian citizenship to children born in mixed marriages.
Tsekov believes that such amendments to the legislation will soon come from the government.
The parliamentarian also spoke in favor of simplifying the acquisition of citizenship by compatriots, including those living in the territory of Ukraine and Belarus.
Earlier that day, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at the 7th World Congress of Compatriots proposed to automatically grant Russian citizenship to children born in mixed marriages. He added that legislators want to implement this initiative as part of supporting compatriots.
Earlier that day, Russian President Vladimir Putin, in his message to the participants of the World Congress of Compatriots, called the support of compatriots a top priority for Russia.
The President added that the forum is being held after the provisions on the protection of the rights and interests of compatriots, as well as on the preservation of the all-Russian cultural identity, have been introduced into the Constitution of the Russian Federation.
