“We feel abandoned”. This is what Diego Argudo, the brother of the 24-year-old Valencian in coma in Thailand after suffering a serious motorcycle accident, after hearing the news that the Government will not charter any medical plane to bring the young woman back, a decision that the Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, has communicated to the mayor of the town where she resides. the family
As Diego himself confirmed to this newspaper, it was last Thursday when he received a call from the first mayor of Godelleta, Amparo Pardo, to inform him that the Ministry of Defense had denied Angela the medical plane, since all available aircraft they were found “mission” in the Canary Islands.
“Since they are not in this situation, they cannot know the feeling of abandonment that we have at this moment,” criticizes Ángela’s brother, who insults Minister Robles with that phrase she uttered when she did allow the transfer of the Spanish citizen Álex García to Bilbao last April: “We will not leave any Spaniard behind.” «He said he would help all Spaniards and with my sister he has not fulfilledwhen it is also sending medical planes to the Canary Islands to assist people who are not compatriots,” Diego criticizes.
All this, as revealed by the family member, they have already contacted different andprivate companies that manage repatriations of sick people and they hope that it will be between the end of this week or the beginning of next week when they can bring the young woman back after the doctors have authorized the transfer.
“The doctors have given the go-ahead after the brain inflammation has subsided, so he could withstand the pressure of flying,” says the brother, who confirms that when he returns he will continue his recovery at the La Fe Hospital in Valencia.
As it is, the family is more optimistic about Angela’s positive evolution and, at the same time, disappointed by the Government’s decision not to send health agents from the Aeroevacuation Medical Unit of the Air and Space Army (UMAER), as the newspaper Las Provincias has reported.
The call of Robles
In Mayor Pardo’s conversation with Margarita Robles, as detailed in this newspaper, the minister assured that her mission is to «manage the taxes of all Spaniards in the most appropriate way possible”, since the medicalized planes available to Defense “are on a mission in the Canary Islands.”
Likewise, according to the municipal version, Robles would have explained to the first mayor that Angela’s situation is not the same as that of the Spaniard repatriated to Bilbao from Thailand, since his family had previously spent 500,000 euros on two medicalized planes that ultimately failed. «We cannot be bringing everyone who asks for it»Pardo says the minister told him.
The young woman’s family announced the news and in just a few hours they managed to raise 301,611 euros through donations to cover the medical bills -5,000 euros a day- and the medical plane, despite the fact that the first intention was for the Government to be the one. It will make the trip possible and thus be able to donate the money to a charitable cause.
Now, after making sure that they will have to pay it, it is worth remembering that several candidates must be subtracted from the 300,000 euros raised. The first, the commissions from GoFundme, which amount to 15,619 euros, as announced by ABC. Furthermore, according to calculations by financial experts, the family will have to pay taxes close to 37% for gift taxan amount that could exceed 112,000 euros.
