Santander woke up startled after the explosion and subsequent collapse of a building in the neighborhood of La Albericia, which has left several injured and three people missing those who are currently looking for. The event occurred at dawn, when the emergency services received a call alerting of the explosion and the fire after 4:00 a.m.according to City Hall sources. Although the causes are still being investigated, some sources point to the explosion of a cylinder as the origin of the incident.
At this time, the emergency services are acting in the area and the Government of Cantabria will report the event in a press conference that has been called at 8:30 a.m. at the Marqués de Valdecilla Hospital.
At the site of the explosion are the mayor of Santander, Gema Igual; the president of Cantabria, María José Sáenz de Buruaga; and the Government delegate, Eugenia Gómez de Diego.
MEETING CANCELED
On the other hand, the Intermunicipal meeting that the PP of Cantabria had planned to hold this Saturday has been suspended due to the collapse of the building.
The meeting was scheduled to start at 10:00 a.m. at the Santemar hotel in the Cantabrian capital, with the presence of the president of Buruaga; the deputy secretary of Autonomous and Local Coordination and Electoral Analysis of the PP, Elías Bendodo; and the mayor of Santander.
COLLAPSE
Seven years ago, Santander experienced another collapse of a building. At that time, the event occurred on Sol Street, where part of a building collapsed due to the works that were being carried out in one of the ground floors for a hospitality establishment.
Fortunately there were no victims to mourn since the housing block was evacuated during the morning of that same day thanks to a call from a neighbor a few hours before the structure collapsed. At the time, neighbors warned on numerous occasions that the works being carried out in the old ‘Masters’ pub were causing significant damage to the structure of the building. According to those affected, the complaints at the City Council were repeated but ignored.
The trigger for those events was, according to the City Council’s sanctioning file, an “excess of work” on the premises. The works ended up affecting a load-bearing wall and lowering the floor more than the minor construction permit allowed, causing the collapse of that area of the building.
