The head of European diplomacy and the president of the European Parliament defend the sending of more weapons to kyiv
The European Union (EU) has condemned “in the strongest possible way” the attacks on civilians in kyiv and other Ukrainian cities. The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, has been “deeply shocked” by the bombings that have taken place in the Ukrainian capital -which has caused at least eight deaths and a dozen wounded- and the attacks in towns such as Mikolaiv, Zaporizhia and Dnipro. “These acts have no place in the twenty-first century and I condemn them in the strongest possible way,” he said.
The community bloc has reinforced its message of support for Ukraine and has stressed that “more military aid is on the way.” Borrell has been one of the strongest advocates of sending weapons to kyiv with the proposal for a sixth tranche with which the EU is financing military support to the country. “Wars are won with weapons,” he said just a few weeks ago before the European Parliament, where he called on member states and European citizens “not to waver” in their support for Ukraine.
The president of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, has also shown her rejection of the “disgusting” Russian bombings. These acts, she said, “show the world anew the regime we are up against: one that attacks indiscriminately.” Faced with the freedom and territorial sovereignty that Ukraine defends, Putin personifies “a reign of terror and death (…). This is criminal. They will be responsible. Ukraine will win and Europe will not look the other way », she has written on her social networks.
In a second message, the Maltese has assured that “the only way out of the Kremlin is to leave” the country and added that “appeasement will not work” with Russia, in a clear reference to sending weapons from the West. The president of the European Parliament has been toughening up since the beginning of the Russian invasion and, at last week’s summit in Prague, she assured that what Ukraine needs is “heavy weapons and tanks.” “Member States can provide them. As Russia escalates its aggression, we too must respond in kind (…). We must not look the other way », she settled.
