The European People’s Party wants a commitment from Teresa Ribera that she will resign if she is prosecuted by the DANA management to allow her to move to the vice-presidency of the European Commission. The condition, advanced by El Mundo, represents a certain departure from the position defended by Alberto Núñez Feijóo, who has redoubled the offensive to demand another candidate from Pedro Sánchez, despite the support that the president of the community government herself has given Ribera. , Ursula von der Leyen.
The Spanish PP held Ribera responsible for the management of the Valencia disaster during its examination in the European Parliament, which was the toughest and most tense of the 26 that have been held in the parliamentary committees to analyze the new candidates for European commissioners. And the Spanish delegation suggested the possible accusation of the third vice president, which is indicated in a complaint filed by Vox and an association.
“History and perhaps also the judges will judge her for her inaction and incompetence,” the spokesperson for the Spanish PP, Dolors Montserrat, snapped before asking her the question: “Do you agree to resign if you find yourself involved judicially so as not to drag the discredit to Ursula von der Leyen and the College of Commissioners? Feijóo’s PP thus pointed out that the central government and the vice president of Ecological Transition will have judicial responsibilities for the management of DANA.
And now Manfred Weber’s group takes up that gauntlet, but not completely, because it raises the procedural moment in which it places that condition: from imputation to prosecution, that is, that there is an oral trial with attribution of a crime after the instruction. Furthermore, it clashes with the strategy that Feijóo’s PP had after Ribera’s examination, which has demanded a new Spanish name for the College of Commissioners.
What they maintain in the European People’s Party is that this condition does not even imply their ‘yes’ in Ribera’s evaluation, which is essential for his nomination to go ahead. And they assure that the condition, together with the explanations in Congress, is the previous step so that “the coordinators can meet to evaluate Ribera”, despite the fact that it is a procedure established in the regulations of the European Parliament without any type of condition. and for which the groups have five days from the exam. “The result of this evaluation does not have to be positive,” they point out. The condition is also imposed after Von der Leyen has said that her support for Ribera remains intact.
The rejection expressed by the popular people to the Spanish vice president, added to Von der Leyen’s decision to raise the Italian extreme right to that rank, has caused an unprecedented political crisis with an uncertain ending. The socialists accuse the EPP of breaking the agreement they reached in July to support the German’s second term. And what they assure in the group led by Iratxe García is that Ribera is a condition sine qua non if they want their support for the entire College of Commissioners that will be voted on, in principle, at the end of November.
