Brussels will also finance other Spanish transport infrastructure such as the Bergara junction and the ports of Bilbao and Las Palmas
The European Commission (EC) will allocate a total of 13.92 million euros to the railways and the intermodal station of Murcia, in the neighborhood of El Carmen. An item that is part of the 5,400 million euros that the EC will allocate to 135 projects to improve the transport infrastructure network and connectivity in Europe, which will translate into funds for railway connections, road networks and port structures.
Other projects selected in Spain are the high-speed adaptation of the ‘Basque Greek Y’, which will receive the largest number of funds. Specifically, Brussels grants 145.42 million to develop the works of the Bergara junction that will link the high-speed branches from Bilbao to San Sebastián with the Vitoria-Bilbao branch.
The works to install photovoltaic cells in the port of Bilbao (14.25 million), the construction of a new terminal in the Bay of Cádiz (15.64 million), or the works for the extension of a parking area will receive funds safe and secure on the Spanish-French border (3.49 million).
There will also be European investments for the expansion of the port of Las Palmas (20.6 million); and actions related to improving lorry parking areas in the Mediterranean and Atlantic Corridor (3.26 million).
“We are investing in projects across Europe that will improve infrastructure links for more sustainable and efficient transport, as well as to increase safety and interoperability and create jobs,” said Transport Commissioner Adina Valean.
As he pointed out, the crisis in Ukraine has reinforced “the importance of the EU transport sector and of having a fluid and well-connected infrastructure network”, emphasizing that among the selected projects is improving train connections between Ukraine and Europe .
