The Euroleague basketball announced this Saturday that the 49-year-old Slovenian referee Matej Boltauzer It will not whistle again, at least, until the 2025-26 season. A sanction derived from the fact that the Balkan, in December 2023, was caught stealing a perfume from one of the stores at Belgrade airport, the Nikola Teslaafter directing a competition match. Boltauzer will be on the bench this entire campaign and it is not certain that he will referee again in the next one, as it will be a commission of his own. The events occurred specifically on December 5, 2023. Boltauzer had been in charge of refereeing in a Partizan – Monaco disputed that same day and, when he was preparing to leave Serbia, he was caught stealing a perfume in one of the Nikola Tesla establishments. However, the cameras captured the theft, the police went in search of him and he quickly confessed to the robbery.
He was not arrested and, a few months later, on April 30, the Red Star of Belgrade made public documents in which Boltauzer had reached an agreement to avoid being prosecuted, which consisted of paying for the perfume and donating about 30,000 Serbian dinars, about 260 euros, to a charity organization. When this information was uncovered, the former player Matt Janningwho came through the ranks of Baskonia, assured that Boltauzer “had been stealing for years”, although he seemed to be referring to strictly sporting aspects.
