The European Union intends to allocate €270 million in grants to Armenia over the next four years. This was stated on April 5 by the head of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen, at a press conference following a trilateral meeting of the EU, USA and Armenia in Brussels.
“We will provide €270 million in grants over the next four years. <…> We will support Armenia so that it becomes more sustainable. We will support small businesses, small and medium-sized businesses, help them develop, enter new markets,” the Armenian agency quotes her as saying News.am.
According to her, the EU will invest primarily in infrastructure projects. In particular, the Black Sea electric cable project, as well as the production of renewable energy, she added.
Earlier that day, the head of the EU delegation to Armenia, Ambassador Vasilis Maragos, said that the European Union intends to support the republic on the issue of non-lethal weapons. We are talking about the support Armenia needs, which will strengthen its potential.
Before this, on March 31, the head of the Armenian Foreign Ministry Ararat Mirzoyan said that the United States and Europe are now the main partners for Armenia. He also noted that now the country is really going to develop partnerships with the United States and a number of European countries.
At the same time, the Russian Ambassador to Armenia Sergei Kopyrkin expressed the opinion that the United States views cooperation with the republic as an opportunity to damage relations between Yerevan and Moscow. The diplomat emphasized that this situation is dangerous and could have a detrimental effect on Russian-Armenian relations.
The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova also said on March 28 that the West is turning Armenia into an instrument for implementing its own plans and this is of concern
