The European People’s Party (EPP) will support Teresa Ribera as a candidate for vice president of the European Commission, along with the other pending candidates, as long as the Spanish politician provides the expected explanations during her appearance this Wednesday at the Congress of Deputies in Madrid. This position is adopted despite the opposition of the Spanish Popular Party, a partner of the EPP.
Manfred Weber, president of the popular group in the European Parliament, proposed this position in a meeting held this Wednesday morning with national delegations. According to parliamentary sources, all delegations, except the Spanish one, agree with the proposed commitment.
Among the new European commissioners, Ursula von der Leyen – also from the EPP – proposed Teresa Ribera as Executive Vice President responsible for Competition and Ecological Transition.
Despite the rejection of Alberto Núñez Feijóo’s party, the approval of the new European Commission will be formalized this afternoon. The coordinators of the political groups plan to support, by a two-thirds majority, Teresa Ribera and the other six commissioners still pending. Among them is the Italian Raffaele Fitto, appointed by Giorgia Meloni, who will continue as executive vice president despite the attempts of the socialists to withdraw this position from him.
There will be expansion.
