According to Carlos Fávaro (Agriculture and Livestock), his ministry will be temporarily transferred to Rio Grande do Sul when the water recedes
The Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Carlos Fávarosaid that the floods in Rio Grande do Sul are the environment “demanding what was taken from him”. In Fávaro’s assessment, the catastrophe is over “with the denialist speech”.
“We are certainly in a climate crisis. The environment is demanding what was taken from it. See Rio Grande do Sul which, after 3 years of drought, has now had 3 floods in a short period”, said the minister in an interview with the newspaper Folha de S. Paulopublished on Tuesday (May 21, 2024).
“We have already had other occurrences, such as the 1941 flood in Rio Grande do Sul, but the frequency of these events ends with denialism. […] We need to act quickly to stop these changes”, he added.
The floods in Rio Grande do Sul leave 161 dead and 85 missing, according to report card issued by the State Civil Defense at 6pm on Tuesday (May 21). In total, more than 2.3 million people were directly or indirectly affected by the tragedy, 71,503 are in shelters and 581,633 were displaced.
For the recovery of the State, according to Fávaro, after the water recedes, “the Ministry of Agriculture will be transferred to the State and will be installed, temporarily, in several regions”.
Regarding the import of rice authorized by the federal government to cover the losses caused by plantations in Rio Grande do Sul, Fávaro once again said that the measure “It is not to confront the producer, but to tell the speculator that the government has mechanisms to guarantee stability”.
