The activities of the tripartite summit between Egypt, Greece and Cyprus, in its ninth round, come within the framework of the tripartite cooperation mechanism between the three countries, which was launched in 2014.
Experts in international relations and the energy file emphasized that the electrical connection file is the broad title of the current summit, based on the closely related agreements in this field between Egypt, Cyprus and Greece that would provide Europe with electricity and help it confront the clean and renewable energy crisis. It is the crisis that is likely to worsen in the coming period in the old continent.
A few days ago, Egypt signed two successive electrical interconnection agreements, the first with Greece, and the second with Cyprus. The two agreements include the establishment of a direct interconnection network for the exchange of electricity between Egypt and Cyprus on the one hand, and Egypt and Greece on the other hand, in preparation for the electrical connection with the European Union countries.
During his speech at the tripartite summit in Athens, the Egyptian President said that the conclusion of two bilateral agreements to connect the electrical grid in Egypt with Greece and Cyprus at the bilateral level is a preliminary step, “which brings us closer to the common goal that we aspire to, which is the electrical connection later with the rest of the European continent.”
Gas and Electricity Egypt
Mohamed Helmy Helal, head of the Society of Energy Engineers and Investors, says that Egypt is making tremendous efforts, which began in 2014 by demarcating maritime borders and building foundational bases for the establishment of the Eastern Mediterranean Forum and the discovery of the Zohr gas field, then the electrical connection with Cyprus, Greece and then the European Union, which will pay off in a period of time. Medium, not long.
The global energy expert added, in an interview with “Sky News Arabia”, that the demand for clean energy from Egypt is driven by the pressure that European countries are under as a result of the lack of gas and the energy conflict with Russia, which gives the surplus electricity, gas and solar energy produced in Egypt a great added value. .
Helal continued, saying that Egypt is seeking to strengthen its position as a regional energy center in the Eastern Mediterranean, based on the huge infrastructure that has been established in Egypt during the past years, and the new discoveries of gas and oil.
The Egyptian expert stressed that the Egyptian electricity will illuminate and warm the homes of Europeans to a maximum in the coming winter, through the gates of Cyprus and Greece, and Egypt is racing against time to achieve this great goal.
Helal stressed that the energy file in Egypt gives strength to the Egyptian state and strengthens its position regionally and internationally as a supportive force for the global economy, as the Egyptian energy will, in a short period, be the mainstay for investments and projects in Europe, as it is the closest source of energy to Europe and is highly competitive over other countries.
The importance of the triple summit
Atef El-Saadawi, an expert at the Al-Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies, says that the continuation of the tripartite summit between Egypt, Cyprus and Greece since 2014 until today, despite the international crises and the spread of Corona, is one of the components of this cooperation mechanism.
In an interview with Sky News Arabia, Al-Saadawi adds that the importance of the tripartite alliance is that it is based on the principle of achieving common and mutual interests in several files, the most important of which is the energy file.
The Egyptian expert continues that the file of the electrical connection between Egypt and Europe, through the gates of Cyprus and Greece, is the most prominent file of the current summit, including its strategic importance for Egypt, which is looking for a large market that absorbs the huge electricity surplus that Egypt has succeeded in achieving during the recent period.
El-Saadawi explains that Egypt’s electricity will not stop at the borders of Europe, but will extend through an international network that reaches the Gulf states, Lebanon and Syria via Jordan, which represents a huge project for Egypt that enhances its regional and international weight.
