The driver who ran over two young people who were waiting for the bus in Neptuno Square, killing one of them, has tested 1.89 grams per liter of alcohol in his blood, which would be almost four times the limit allowed while driving. He has also tested positive for drugs. The accident took place last Friday, around three in the morning, after the man, a 34-year-old Spaniard, lost control of his vehicle heading to Atocha and crashed into the EMT marquee.
One of the young men, 25 years old, died right there. The other had to be transferred to the hospital with advance notice suffering from multiple fractures in his trunk and legs. “What happened to me is that I am not used to drinking,” the driver told the agents. The judge has already ordered his entry into provisional prison.
His transfer to prison will take place when he is discharged from the hospital, where he remains admitted due to the head trauma suffered. In total, he will be charged with four crimes, homicide due to serious recklessness, serious injuries, reckless driving and driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
It should be remembered that in Spain it is allowed to drive with a blood alcohol level that does not exceed 0.5 g/l of alcohol in the blood, which means that the man behind the wheel quadrupled his alcohol level that morning.
Already that night, at the scene, the Municipal Corps agents subjected him to a blood test to clarify whether he exceeded the permitted levels of alcohol or had ingested drugs: the result was positive in the first of the tests. He was accompanied in the car by another man, who was unharmed; and according to the data collected by the members of the Judicial Traffic Police Station, it is likely that they returned after a Christmas dinner. Tourism had all the papers in order.
