The bus transporting Mexican workers overturned after it was hit by the truck driven by a man who was under the influence of alcohol.
The impact has claimed the lives of at least eight mexicans and has left around 40 injured, as confirmed by the authorities.
The accident occurred last Tuesday, the bus was transporting 53 workers agricultural. The passenger truck collided with a pickup truck in Marion County, north of Orlando, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash, attributed to the van driver drunkcaused the bus to leave the road and end up overturned in a field, while the migrants were transferred to Cannon Farms, in Dunellon, for the watermelon harvest.
Eight Mexicans lost their lives in the accident, while another eight were seriously injured, Marion County Fire and Rescue reported. Additionally, 37 more passengers on the bus were taken to hospital with less serious injuries.
The cause of the accident
The authorities arrested the driver of the truck, Bryan Maclean Howard, for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Howard now faces eight counts of involuntary manslaughteraccording to a statement from Dave Kerner, executive director of the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.
Cannon Farms, the company the workers were heading to, announced its closure in honor of the victims and injuries of the accident. Through their Facebook page, they asked for prayers for the affected families and thanked them for their support during this difficult time.
