It is a very touching story that a 27-year-old Australian girl recently told on social media, moving users all over the world. Her name is Bella Johnston and from the ages of 14 to 19 she unknowingly faced cancer, which was diagnosed only after a long time. At first, she explains, everyone thought she was exaggerating and that she suffered from an eating disorder.
Underestimate the symptoms of a patient and thus delaying treatments that can save lives, is a phenomenon that unfortunately, as recent studies certify, is occurring more and more often. This is exactly what happened a few years ago to Bella Johnston, an Australian girl who today he is 27 years old and who decided to tell his story to raise awareness as many people as possible.
It all started when he was 14 years old and he started to feel unwell. Persistent headaches, chronic fatigue, nausea and fainting are the symptoms that began to compromise her daily life and pushed her, after lost over 20 kg of weightto consult different doctors.
All the doctors she turned to, however, have always underestimated the situationtelling her that it was all in her head, that she was exaggerating or that she was probably suffering from a eating disorder such as bulimia and anorexia. No one, until she turned 19, ever told her to get targeted tests for cancer or other serious diseases.
Bella Johnston’s terrible diagnosis
Fortunately, a doctor she turned to thought to investigate her situation further and subjected her to checks which highlighted a sad reality. All that time, for 5 years, she Bella had unknowingly faced cancer, a paragangliomaa rare tumor that affects the neuroendocrine system.
If discovered and treated in the right time, the disease guarantees a cure in 95% of cases, but the percentage in his case was considerably reduced due to the delay in diagnosis. Bella managed to survive, but it still bears the marks today of his struggle and of the doctors’ errors. In fact, she had half her esophagus and half her tongue removed and lost hearing in one ear.
