A “universal donor” is a person with I blood group. Yulia Tkachenko, head of the department for the development of medicine at BestDoctor, told Izvestia about this.
“At present, according to the law, blood can only be transfused with identical groups (the first – the first, the second – the second, etc.). But if we proceed from biology, then blood type I is a universal donor (it can be transfused to any other group), and IV is a universal recipient (any group can be transfused to a person with a fourth group),” said the physician.
Earlier, in January, the SM-Clinic surgeon, Candidate of Medical Sciences Aglam Nurpisov told in what cases blood transfusion can be dangerous. According to him, the absolute indication for blood transfusion is its loss. Also, this procedure can be carried out in a planned manner, for example, in the treatment of various hematological and oncological diseases.
Contraindications are heart failure, myocardial infarction, impaired protein metabolism, severe allergies, and various diseases.
In October, the geneticist of the SM-Clinic, candidate of medical sciences Victoria Rumyantseva spoke about the existence of 43 blood group systems.
She noted that as of 2021, The International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT) recognizes 43 blood group systems containing 345 erythrocyte antigens and encoded by 48 genes.
