The uncontrolled use of antibiotics is a global problem and one of the most serious threats to human health according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Olga Dekhtyareva, chief physician of the Hemotest Laboratory, told Izvestiya about the most common mistakes when taking antibiotics. She listed the most common mistakes when taking antibiotics.
“The first mistake is a misunderstanding of the purpose of the drug. An antibiotic is meant to treat an infection caused by bacteria. For viruses, there is a separate class of drugs – antiviral. At home, it is impossible to reliably distinguish one type of infection from another – even a specialist cannot do this without test results, ”the specialist emphasized.
The opinion about the safety of antibiotics is also erroneous, since most drugs of this class have a very short duration of administration – just a few days. As Dekhtyareva noted, the antibiotic does not know how to distinguish between “us” and “them”, so the beneficial microflora is also under attack. This leads to the third mistake – not to accompany the intake of antibiotics with probiotics, which help to avoid dysbacteriosis and other digestive disorders.
The fourth mistake is a violation of the admission rules. Antibiotics require the strictest adherence to the dosage and the time interval – only in this way the desired concentration of the drug will be maintained in the body, the doctor added.
In addition, she stressed that antibiotics should not be started without a doctor’s prescription. One of the most likely outcomes of self-medication is a decrease in the amount of drugs that are effective for a particular patient, and this can affect even those who have never been prescribed antibiotics. It is worth remembering that an allergy can develop on an antibiotic.
Earlier, on January 29, Honored Doctor of Russia Mikhail Kagan said that if the temperature rises to 38 degrees with the Omicron COVID-19 disease, it is worth taking antipyretics that you need to have in your home first aid kit. He called drugs based on paracetamol and ibuprofen the safest. With aspirin as an antipyretic, you need to be more careful, for children it is generally contraindicated for such a purpose, Kagan noted.
