Nayib Bukele swept the presidential elections in El Salvador and as planned. Even though the vote count was not enough to ensure how many seats the ruling Nuevas Ideas obtained, the truth is that Bukele secured his second consecutive term. What did the president do in his first term to achieve this victory and what awaits the country? A sustained popularity of Bukele or a weakening of democracy? We discuss it in this edition of El Debate.
As the polls indicated, Nayib Bukele swept the presidential elections in El Salvador. Although 24 hours after the polls closed the Supreme Electoral Tribunal still had not delivered the final results, until that moment only 70% of the votes for the presidency had been counted, and of those votes, Bukele had more than 80%.
Even with the constitutional ban, Bukele not only ran for office, but won resoundingly. What makes him the most popular politician in Latin America? Has democracy weakened in El Salvador in the last five years? We talked about it with our guests:
– Verónica Reyna, director of Human Rights of the Passionist Social Service.
– Romeo Auerbach, deputy of GANA, the right-wing party with which Nayib Bukele was elected in 2019.
