The superhero cinema has embraced its stereotypes after the arrival of “Iron Man” in 2008. While the film built the Marvel Cinematic Universe and paved the way for the franchise, “the knight of the night” of Christopher Nolan It appeared in the same year to surpass its predecessor and tell us an exciting story that transcended the limitations of a theme that has now become a genre.
As we saw, Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) returned as Batman to continue his war against organized crime in Gotham. With the help of Lieutenant Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) and District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart), he takes on the Joker (Heath Ledger), a new criminal unleashing chaos and terrifying citizens. Fourteen years later, the story is still as powerful as the first time.
“We did it at the right time,” says the director, who is grateful that he had no obstacles in bringing his vision to life. “We developed everything with complete creative freedom and showed the studio what we wanted to do.” Unlike current productions, said film was not forced to be framed in cinematographic universes (such as the MCU and DCEU). Nor to follow a pre-established order without the possibility of making risky decisions.

Perhaps “The Knight of the Night” is not the most representative exponent of the supergenre (to the delight of several fans), but its brilliance lies in breaking out of obtuse parameters.
It is a sample of good cinema and taste orchestrated with intelligence, respect and devotion. Its complexity can be seen in the network of nuances and the moral conflict faced by the viewer; in the romanticism of his speech; in his bravery in tragedy.
The script is round, the soundtrack by Hans Zimmer is overwhelming and its narrative keeps us in suspense from start to finish.
Even more surprising is the battle between good and evil, personified by Batman and Joker. Despite all the triumphs, it was Heath Ledger’s monstrous performance as the agent of chaos that ended up immortalizing the film as a cult classic.

It’s not easy to find fault with the film when it satisfies all your expectations, but it is impossible to blame Ledger’s impeccable performance.
To create the iconic villain, he isolated himself for six weeks in a hotel to develop his tics, wacky voice and unforgettable laugh. The entire process was recorded in a journal that he used during filming to dive back into the dark mind of the character.
Now “The Dark Knight” occupies an enduring place in the history of cinema. His legacy and impact have made him a benchmark inside and outside the genre.
For those of us who were able to see it at the time, we have the memory of having witnessed an unrepeatable phenomenon.
