At the beginning of this month, the leaders of the Sudanese Beja tribes threatened to resume the escalation and closure operations in the east of the country, with the expiry of the month deadline they gave the government, and the failure to implement their demands on December 4.
With the expiration of the deadline, the Supreme Council of the Beja Opticals and the Independent Amaulia postponed the steps of closing the Port of Sudan and the National Road in eastern Sudan for a period of two weeks; In response to the request of a government committee to resolve the crisis headed by the Deputy Chairman of the Sovereign Council, Lieutenant-General Mohamed Hamdan Daglo “Hemedti”.
At that time, the leader of the council, Muhammad Taher, said that the higher committee in charge of the eastern crisis, headed by Daglo, asked to be given a deadline to resolve the issue, and that the postponement came for further consultations with all components of the east; to reach positive results.
The Council of Beja Opticals and Independent Amauds in Eastern Sudan, headed by Muhammad Al-Amin Turk, rejects the Eastern Sudan Track Agreement signed in the capital of the state of South Sudan between the government and representatives of eastern Sudan in the Revolutionary Front in February 2020.
Turk had stated more than once that the eastern path was rejected in all the eastern states and would not be applied to them, and demanded half of the country’s eastern resources for the eastern states, the abolition of the eastern path in the peace of Juba, the dissolution of the transitional government, and the formation of a competent government.
He explained that they sat with the President of the Sovereign Council, his deputy and the Prime Minister regarding their demands, which remained the same two years ago, even before the official signing of the Juba Agreement.
When did the crisis start?
Last September 17, the Beja tribe, one of the largest population components in eastern Sudan, began closing the country’s main port, and placed barricades “barriers” in many cities and points on the main road through which the country’s exports and imports pass, as well as closing the two oil export and import lines. .
They raised several main demands: “ending marginalization, achieving development for the eastern regions, canceling the East Track Agreement included in the Juba Peace Agreement, changing or expanding the political incubator (the ruling coalition), dissolving the Empowerment Removal Committee and replacing it with the Anti-Corruption Commission, dissolving the current government, and forming a council A military man runs the country for a transitional period, followed by elections.
In early November, the Beja Council lifted the blockade that had been imposed on the port of Port Sudan and the national roads that lead to the region, but for a period of one month to give the central government in Khartoum an opportunity to resolve the issue and cancel the East Track Agreement, the subject of the crisis.
Mediation in Juba
At the beginning of this week, the state of South Sudan intervened on the crisis line in an attempt to heal the rift and return life to normal in the eastern region, which is the lung of Sudan, as the previous closures completely paralyzed life.
The southern mediation stressed the importance of reaching a complete consensus between all components of the eastern Sudan region, in order to reach a specific vision on how to manage the region.
This came during a meeting that brought together the Vice-President of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, Lieutenant-General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo “Hemedti”, and the head of South Sudan’s mediation, Tut Galwak, in the presence of the signatories to the Juba Peace Agreement in Sudan.
According to a statement by the Sudanese Sovereignty Council, Tut Gallwak said that the meeting discussed the crisis in eastern Sudan, and the importance of reaching complete consensus among all components in order to reach a specific vision on how to manage the region.
He pointed out that the east is the gateway to Sudan, which calls for its stability, stressing that the President of South Sudan, Salva Kiir Mayardit, is following with great interest the implementation of the peace agreement signed in Juba.
The mediation team responded to the invitation of the President of the Sovereign Council, Lieutenant-General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, to the need for the mediation delegation to continue its efforts in order to bridge the views of all components; To reach an agreement that guarantees peace, stability and development for the people of eastern Sudan.
Qalwak explained that the mediation team’s sessions with the various parties will continue over the next two days, to build a common base that satisfies all the people of the East with their different components.
stifle the government
Sudanese writer and political analyst, Haitham Mahmoud, said that the East has two main components, “Beja” and “Bani Amer”, and between the two sides “what did mourning do”, especially after Abdullah Hamdouk’s government contained Bani Amer and considered the Beja component of the remnants of the “National Congress” regime (The ruling party during the era of Omar al-Bashir); What increased the state of congestion, he said.
Mahmoud added, in statements to “Sky News Arabia”, that many believe that the issue of the East will be resolved by absorbing Al-Nazir Turk and appointing him as a member of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, an opinion that is not supported by logic. Because it has become a mass issue and the rights of the people in which all the components of the east agree (Beja, Bani Amer, the other components) and the eastern revolutionaries can stifle the central government by closing the only port.
He made it clear that the government cannot open another front for war in the east, no matter the cost, and it will not be able to open the path of the east, which was included in the Juba Peace Agreement, which bypassed a major component and a large group of the people of the East.
He pointed out that the government’s delay in implementing the demands of the people of the East and its formation of a “lazy committee” that did not become active until after threats of escalation would severely complicate the scene in the event of closing the main port and the only sea port, especially since the previous closure inflicted heavy losses on the country and contributed to the collapse of the dilapidated economy.
breakthrough soon
He considered that what happened recently in dealing with the beholder left during his health crisis a promising start. As he found special interest from the state, he left for Jordan on a private plane for treatment.
The political analyst expected the mediation of South Sudan to succeed in defusing the crisis in which the government recently showed interest and flexibility, and dealt with Turk as a leader after news of his nomination for Sovereign and concern for his health, which are very influential factors in the Sudanese people.
