Mikhail Popkov is a Russian man who went from being part of the country’s authorities to one of the biggest serial killers in Russian history.
This man deceived his fellow police officers for years and, although the victims pointed to him as the culprit, they believed that Popkov was not capable of committing such acts.
The first time it was pointed out by a victim was in 1998. The young woman, identified by police files as Svetlana M., 17, was walking to a bar to meet some friends when a patrol approached her.
In the car was Mikhail Popkov. He very kindly offered to take the young woman to her destination. She, trusting the policeman, accepted.
The next morning, Svetlana was found unconscious in a park. Upon waking up, she went to the hospital, where they confirmed that she had been raped.
She told authorities that a police officer had taken her to the park, removed her clothes, and slammed her into a tree. The uniformed officers showed her photos of her companions and the victim recognized Popkov as her aggressor.
Immediately, they went to Popkov’s house to find out what had happened, but his wife opened the door and assured them that he had been with her all night. The policemen thought that the victim had made a mistake.

The police rapist
For the year 1998, Mikhail He was 33 years old and had been raping and killing women for six years in the city of Angarsk, Russia. At that time, the police did not know the identity of the murderer who, due to the brutality of his crimes, the press nicknamed ‘The Werewolf’ or ‘The Angarsk Maniac’.
Popkov, favored by police negligence, continued his crimes for another 14 years and added a total of 78 proven victims, among whom there were 77 women and one man. In addition, there are three other victims who could not prove that he was her aggressor due to lack of evidence.
When he was captured, Popkov confessed that he had begun to rape and murder in reaction to a deception by his wife. He used to choose women between the ages of 17 and 40, who were walking on the streets. He offered them a ride in the car or sometimes in the patrol car.

Being mounted in the vehicle, he suggested that they have a drink with him in a bar. If they did not accept, he took them to their destination. But if they accepted, he would take them to a desolate place where he beat, raped and murdered them.
In his confession, he said that He committed these crimes because his wife Elena had told him that at the time of her infidelity she was drunk and could not measure her actions.
For Popkov, the fact that a woman got into the car of a stranger and agreed to have a drink with him was enough to consider that she deserved to die.
catching the killer
Thirteen years later, on June 23, 2012, the authorities managed to capture Mikhail Popkov at a police checkpoint on his way to the city of Vladivostok. Investigators had linked the 1998 case to prints they found on a recent victim.
In 2015, Popkov underwent a first trial in which he confessed to 22 murders and two attempted murders. The authorities found him guilty and he was sentenced to life in prison.
Two years later, he expanded his statements and confessed to another 59 crimes. He had another trial and was sentenced to his second life sentence. In 2020, he confessed to two other crimes, but they have not been tried due to lack of evidence.

Public opinion and the media do not agree with this situation and have called for the death penalty for the man who murdered 78 women.
