Language is the tool that human beings have used for centuries to form their civilization. Over time it has evolved and adapted to the needs of different regions. One of the languages that has shown the most evidence of this, due to the large number of countries that use it as a first or second language, is Spanish.
Studies carried out by sociologists and linguists have determined that each Spanish-speaking country has its own characteristics and expressions, making it difficult to determine which is the region in which a purer Spanish is spoken, taking into account the clarity and neutrality of the accent. However, there are places, such as Chile, that make this difference clear because their dialect differs in intonation, speed and lexicon.
There is no doubt that Spanish is a global language, an official language of the United Nations and a reference language in international relations. Its growth is more than significant and is between the five first languages in the world in number of speakers, in number of countries where it is official and in geographical extension.
The truth is that the majority of Spanish speakers are distributed between Argentina, Colombia and Spain. As explained, the language is a very changing being and, although it seems subjective to determine which of these regions has the purest Spanish, it is possible to talk about which places speak or handle the language better than others based on spelling and grammar.
However, Artificial Intelligence is contrary to this opinion and has offered a top 5 of the countries that are recognized for having clear, fluent and normatively: “neutral” Spanish.
- Colombia: Especially the one spoken in Bogotá and other inland regions, it is frequently praised for its clarity and precise pronunciation. In particular, the accents are soft, and the slow pace makes it easy to understand.
- Mexico: With great cultural and linguistic influence, Mexico is considered a benchmark in the media and communication industry in Spanish. Central Mexican Spanish (from Mexico City) is widely used in the media, film and television, and is understood throughout Latin America.
- Spain: The variety of Spanish spoken in this country (Castilian) is often considered the academic standard in much of Spain. The traditional accent of Madrid is a reference model in the teaching of Spanish, and many institutions consider the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE), based in Madrid, as a source of regulations in the language.
- Peru: Peruvian Spanish, especially that of Lima, is known for its clarity and neutrality. This Spanish is remarkably clean in terms of vocalization and is another favorite in Spanish-language media.
- Argentina: Although the Rio de la Plata accent, which is spoken in Buenos Aires and its surroundings, is somewhat different due to the use of “voseo” and intonation, its cultural influence and precision in expression makes Argentine Spanish valued. Furthermore, his literature is widely recognized.
