It was one of the most famous films in which a machine becomes the protagonist together with real actors. There are many films of this type, but they certainly deserve a separate mention “The Cannonball Run”known in Italy as The craziest race in Americaa small masterpiece directed by Hal Needham released in theaters in 1981 with a billionaire cast: Roger Moore, Farrah Fawcett, Dean Martin, Adrienne Barbeau and Tara Buckman. Well, to celebrate the forty-fifth anniversary from the Countach LP 400 Sone of the cars featured in the film, Automobili Lamborghini brought the female crew, made up of actresses, together for the first time almost half a century later Adrienne Barbeau and Tara Buckman.
The history of this Countach LP 400 S
This Lamborghini Countach LP 400 S was produced in November 1979. Black in color with Mustard interior, it was shipped to the then SEA dealership in Rome and, from there, most likely, sold directly to the United States. Ended up in Florida by an owner who was a friend of the film’s director, she was cast and from there we can say that her legend began, which led her to earn a place in the history of American cinema. As a “stage trick” a wing and two depth lights on the nose, a spoiler, 3 antennas and 12 exhaust pipes behind and, two additional, fake instruments, in front of the passenger seat. Once filming was finished, the Countach was returned to its rightful owner, however retaining the transformations that had been made to it and which remain. In 2009 the car was purchased by a guy named Jeff Ippoliti, an enthusiast now living in Florida but originally from the state of New York, who as a boy, watching the opening scene of the film in 1981, would never have imagined that one day he would own the very car that made him dream on the screen. “I had always been passionate about cars,” he recalls, “but the opening of the film was the first time I had the opportunity to see and hear the Countach in motion: I was fascinated by it. I must have returned to the cinema a dozen times, just to see her again! I saw it live for the first time only 26 years later and it took me another 18 months of negotiations before I could take it home…”
The plot of the movie
“The Cannonball Run” takes inspiration from the Cannonball racewhich carried the cars registered for crossin the shortest possible time, the United States starting from New York and ending in Los Angeles. Adrienne Barbeau and Tara Buckman. It was these two actresses who met again today who drove the Countach which, in the end, was victorious. Among the most memorable scenes, the initial chase lasting over 3 minutes, where the sound of the Countach’s 12-cylinder carburettor is added to the soundtrack. Also during the opening, the scene in which the Countach stops and the passenger comes out of the passenger compartment and, with a can of spray paint, paints an “X” on the road sign. These scenes have become a legendary reference among car enthusiasts, so much so that they have become part of American custom and caused the Countach to become one of the very few cars “deposited” at the Library of Congress.
