The Plenary agrees to start the procedures to carry out the works on a 4,000 square meter plot
The Plenary of the Alhama de Murcia City Council has unanimously approved taking the necessary steps in order to create a new municipally owned cemetery, altering the current one, that of Nuestra Señora del Carmen, which dates from 1919 and belongs to the parish. The Councilor for Urban Planning, Antonio José Caja, assures LA TRUTH that proposals have been made on occasions to the Parish Board that directs the cemetery, in order to enter the City Council to form part of this management body. At the moment, he is still not admitted, despite the fact that the City Council “collaborates with a series of services, and we think that we should be represented on said board,” he says.
Although there is currently no cause for concern about the space required for burial, it is planned to add 4,000 new square meters of municipal property in the coming years. “The owners of the land adjacent to the current cemetery are immersed in the development of this sectorized developable land, from which those meters of facilities will come, located next to the current cemetery,” argues the Councilor for Urban Planning, who clarifies that they will be allocated to said extension and that will be available in just three years. “We will continue negotiating with the Church, and if agreements are not produced, the cemetery would have a parochial and a municipal part,” Caja added.
Tourist attraction
The Department of Culture has launched a project to photograph and date the graves, niches and pantheons of the cemetery. For this they have the approval of the Parish Board. Another element that the City Council wants to provide the cemetery is a series of information panels, “it could be a tourist attraction, explaining the life and work of the people who rest there.”
