The Ministry studies the formula to pay an ‘extra’ of three euros per day and place to the hotels attached to the ministerial program
The how and when has yet to be specified, but it is already clear how much the hotels in the Region of Murcia will receive that are part of the Tourism program of the Institute for the Elderly and Social Services (Imserso) by the Autonomous Community to compensate for the rates approved by the Ministry of Social Rights and the 2030 Agenda. Rates that, according to the hotels themselves and the regional government, are “ruinous” and would have caused “many hotels to drop this season as they could not bear the costs.” This is stated by the Minister of Tourism, Marcos Ortuño, who confirms to THE TRUTH that the item that will be allocated to these hotels will be around one million euros, although the Community is studying the appropriate formula to “enable” the amount, which could be directed in the form direct grants.
This is precisely the amount requested by the affected hotels, which took as a reference the experience of the Valencian Community, where the Government of Ximo Puig has allocated around five million euros to offset the Ministry’s rates, which this year continue to be around 22 euros per place and day, at 2019 levels. “In the Valencian Community there are many more hotels attached to the program, more places available and that is why the amount rises to five million,” explains Pedro López, director of Grupo Hotelania, to which belong to Los Delfines and Las Gaviotas, and spokesperson for the newly established Pro-Imserso Costa Cálida Hotel Platform.
As in the Valencian Community, the help that the hotels in the Region of Murcia would receive from the regional Executive would be around three euros per place per day. Taking into account the 350,000 places available throughout the season in the Region of Murcia, according to the calculations of the platform itself, that figure would rise to almost one million euros that has been brought this week to the negotiating table between the Ministry and the hotel establishments participating in the program.
The amount per square and day will be similar to that approved by the socialist government of Ximo Puig in the Valencian Community
“Maintain quality”
In the opinion of the affected hotels, this aid of three euros per place and day by the Community is “something totally acceptable that, although it would not benefit the companies, it would allow the quality of the service to be maintained,” says Pedro López. In fact, some hotels are still waiting for the firm proposal from the Ministry to finally decide on the opening months, “since opening in February is not the same as opening in May, and especially with these prices per place that it has left us the Ministry”, points out the spokesman for the Pro-Imserso Costa Cálida Hotel Platform.
For his part, the Minister of Tourism recalls that one of the objectives of the regional government is “to reduce the seasonality of the sector” and, in the Region “there is plenty of weather for people to come beyond July and August.” Hence the importance of saving the weakest months of the Imserso season, between winter and spring, which means “also saving the occupancy rates in those months, in addition to helping the cafeterias and places near those hotels and the staff of all those establishments.
