The collapse of a suspension bridge in Cuernavaca causes at least twenty injuries

What was a celebration in the Barranca de Amanalco park in the State of Morelos ended in tragedy. The Paseo Ribereño suspension bridge collapsed just at the moment when the mayor of Cuernavaca, Julio Urióstegui, his wife Luz María Zagal, trustees, aldermen and a dozen citizens of the capital of Morelos were crossing it. The images show that twenty people were crossing at a festive moment, some even jumping on the wooden beams, when the bridge suddenly collapsed and people fell from a height of about two meters into a stream. According to State Civil Protection personnel, of the 25 injured, two are considered serious and 12 have been transferred to different hospitals, but there are no reports of deaths so far.

The accident occurred during the reopening of the tourist area inside the facilities of the Barranca de Amanalco park, one of the most visited parks in the state capital. The Morelos Tourism Department had announced in style the reopening of this tourist attraction in the State of Morelos after two years without activity due to the pandemic.

After the accident, the governor of Morelos, Cuauhtémoc Blanco, posted a message on his Twitter account assuring that he is already in coordination with local authorities to support the care of injured people. I am very sorry for the accident that the mayor of Cuernavaca, José Luis Uriostegui, his wife, work team and media correspondents suffered a few moments ago during the inauguration of Paseo Ribereño. I sincerely hope that there are no serious injuries, ”he said.

The Government of Morelos acknowledged in writing after the incident that the collapsed suspension bridge was not included in the rehabilitation project of the tourist promenade, in which more than three million pesos were spent. These resources, details the local administration, were allocated to the construction of other infrastructure within the park: a pedestrian bridge, a guardhouse, public toilets and lighting. “The State Government regrets the events that occurred and expresses its solidarity with the people who were injured,” the letter ends.
