The Ciezano City Council has asked the owners of the so-called ‘Crocodile block’ to temporarily transfer these lands to use them as a park and ride until a definitive solution is adopted. In return, the City Council would be in charge of cleaning and maintaining the space. It is currently the subject of criticism from nearby neighbors due to the constant appearance of mosquitoes and rodents. This plot of approximately 3,000 square meters is located in the center of the city and strangles the junction of the Paseo Central, where the paintings of Pepe Lucas are located, with that of José Antonio Camacho, already in the San Juan Bosco neighborhood. The aspiration of the Ciezanos has always been that both spaces come together to form one of the largest pedestrian avenues in the Region.
Legislature key
As explained by the councilor for Works, Francisco Martínez, in a meeting with some of the owners they were asked to transfer, for no more than two years and pending a definitive solution, the entire area to cover the parking needs for vehicles. “It would, of course, be a specific action and for a very specific time while waiting for a solution to the problem,” stressed the councilor, who also recalled that the unblocking of this action constitutes one of the fundamental elements of the current legislature.
For his part, the president of the site’s Compensation Board, Francisco Barceló, indicated that indeed “there was a meeting with the new government a few weeks ago, but, at the moment, we have not received any notification for the transfer of the land, to which we would not oppose,” said the owner. Another of the owners, Antonio Lucas, also stated that he has not received any notification either.
Meanwhile, the majority of residents consulted by LA VERDAD believe that this strategic area “should be free of any building and become one of the largest promenades in the Region of Murcia”, as local urban planning scholar Antonio Ballesteros assures, considering that to build “a historic opportunity would be lost like other bad practices that have been committed in Cieza in the past, such as, for example, the destruction of the Borrás theater in the 60s.”
Local historian Francisco Salmerón is also not in favor of strangling the area with a building in the center of the site. «The best thing would be for the Cieza City Council to be able to acquire ownership of the Crocodile block; If not all of it, then the plot that would give continuity to the current walks in the center of the town. “We would not forgive ourselves, nor would our children, for the fact that in the end both spaces do not come together,” considers the writer.
