They streamline the process to award another projected section this month and extend the current circuit to the UCAM campus
In autumn, Calle Ingeniero de la Cierva will have 600 meters of bike lanes that will be connected to the section built last year on Calle Esparta. The Contracting Committee yesterday chose the Murcian Professional Services company, which obtained the best score and offers to do the work for 203,000 euros. You can start the works after signing the contract and finalizing the relevant preparations. He has promised to have it all finished in three months. This project is part of the Cartago Sustainable Mobility Plan, aimed at making ten kilometers of cycle paths, which will double the current circuit.
Cartagena has nine kilometers of bike lanes, which form an incomplete ring that begins at the Alfonso XII Pier and reaches Jorge Juan Street. The works carried out in 2021 connected the section of Capitanes Ripoll with the Ronda Ciudad de La Unión. There is also a part in Juan Fernández that is going to be remodeled. Likewise, the one planned to one side of the Rambla de Benipila to reach the one on Avenida del Cantón, in the Rambla Plan, is already underway.
The Contracting Board was also in charge of advancing the procedure to contract the works of another segment also included in CartaGo. This is the connection of Avenida Juan Carlos I with the campus of the Catholic University of Murcia (UCAM) in the old Los Dolores military barracks. Another of the plans that will go ahead in the coming months is to connect Barrio Peral to the Jorge Juan sector through Víctor Beltrí Avenue and its link with the Vía Verde.
The mayor frames this work in a mobility plan with ten kilometers of itineraries for bicycles
The municipal contracting body also reviewed the selection procedure for the best offer received to install 17 so-called ‘intelligent’ zebra crossings. They will be equipped with motion sensors connected to a lighting system that is activated by the proximity of a pedestrian. They will also have signage to warn drivers. Among the streets chosen are those of Gisbert, Ángel Bruna, Alfonso XIII, Ronda Ciudad de La Unión, Sebastián Feringán and Juan Fernández. The first was placed in Pío XII, next to the Quitapellejos bridge, after the fatal run over of a Navantia worker. almost two years ago. Both the UCAM lane and the traffic lights will have to wait until doubts about several downward offers are resolved in a week.
The number of offers received for the work that will begin shortly in Ingeniero de la Cierva and for the two that are still in process stands out. In the first case, eleven merchants appeared. There are twenty-two who choose to do the UCAM one and another eleven who have applied to improve the zebra crossings. The mayor, Noelia Arroyo, stressed “the interest of the bidders for projects that will transform mobility in Cartagena.”
“We promote new, more sustainable forms of transportation around the city, which will also improve the air quality of Cartagena,” added the councillor.
