The British transport minister, Louise Haighresigned this Friday from Keir Starmer’s Labor Government after learning that in 2014 he admitted a crime of false testimony to the Police for saying in 2013 that his work cell phone had been stolen in a holdupwhen he later found it.
The minister has communicated in a letter to Starmer that, although what happened was “a mistake” that was resolved without being penalized, does not want it to be a distraction in the work of the Executive. Haigh has assured that she remains committed to the Labor project and will support it as an MP in the House of Commons.
The decision by the politician, who has been a deputy since 2015, comes after Sky News and The Times published that in 2014 there had been found guilty before the Justice of having testified incorrectly before the Police in relation to that robbery a year before, for which the agents filed charges.
Given this admission, the court let her go without any penalty, which is the minimum possible outcomewhen it is considered that the experience of being accused is sufficient, he explained.
“I regret having to leave under these circumstances, but I am proud of what we have done. I will continue to fight every day for the people of Sheffield Heeleyfor which I was chosen to represent it,” the youngest minister in history declared in her letter.
In his response, the Prime Minister thanked him for his work to “carry out the ambitious transport agenda of this Government”, of which he highlighted the progress to renationalize the railway system, one of the priorities of this Executive.
“I know he can still make a big contribution in the future,” Starmer told Haigh of 37 years. This resignation is the first of a minister in this Government since the Labor Party came to power after winning by an absolute majority in the July 4 elections, which ended 14 years of Conservative rule.
