The British Government reported that it will implement freedom from this Tuesday to another 1,100 prisoners in England and Welsh, before serving their sentences, to reduce prison overcrowding.
The plan – promised by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Labor party after his victory in the elections last July – excludes those convicted of violent crimes, such as sexual assault and domestic violenceas well as those retained by terrorism.
This is the second group of prisoners that will benefit from this early release, after 1,750 prisoners were released from prison last September.
Early releases – for those who have completed 40% of their sentences– come amid warnings from prison officials that prisons are running out of space.
Several of those released from prison come from open prisonswhich means they have been working for his rehabilitation.
The prison population in England and Wales has grown at a rate of 4,500 a year. The number of prisoners in English and Welsh prisons reached 88,521 people last September, a record numberwhich increased after the imprisonment of those accused of the violent riots last August by far-right groups in several British cities.
