Division of positions in the Board of Prosecutors that the State Attorney General convened this Thursday to give explanations after being charged by the Supreme Court. Part of the members of the Board have transferred their “personal support” to Alvaro Garcia Ortizaccording to sources close to the attorney general, while at least eight members have “advised” his resignation. As reported by Ep, these are the prosecutors of the process —Javier Zaragoza, Jaime Moreno, Fidel Cadena and Consuelo Madrigal—as well as prosecutors Antonio Narváez, José Javier Huete and Elvira Tejada.
However, García Ortiz’s entourage assures that the majority of the Board of Prosecutors has supported him after the Supreme Court opened a criminal case against him for allegedly revealing confidential information about the investigation to the partner of Isabel Díaz Ayuso, Alberto González Amador. In any case, the State Attorney General called the meeting only to “give explanations” and to “involve” the members of the Board in the decision he had already made: to remain in office.
The meeting, which was attended by 30 prosecutors in addition to the attorney general, plus two others who connected electronically, began at 10:00 a.m. and concluded after 12:40 p.m. Over the course of more than two and a half hours, around twenty prosecutors intervened, according to sources from the Public Ministry. The first to do so was García Ortiz, who for about 15 minutes spoke in the same terms in which he spoke last night during an interview on RTVE.
The attorney general has denied any intervention in the leak of the emails that the lawyer of Ayuso’s boyfriend, Alberto González Amador, exchanged with the prosecutor Julián Salto. On the other hand, he has once again defended the decision to publish the press release with which he tried to deny the information that said that the Prosecutor’s Office had proposed a conformity agreement to González Amador.
Besides, Álvaro García Ortiz has confirmed to those present that his intention is to remain in office Attorney General of the State. Something that, on the other hand, he already announced on Wednesday through a statement in which he defended that not resigning is “the least burdensome and most prudent for the institution in the medium and long term.” Among the prosecutors who participated in the meeting, 16 are affiliated with the Progressive Union of Prosecutors – as García Ortiz once was -, nine belong to the Association of Prosecutors and the rest are not affiliated.
