The cultural value of vintage cars
Preserve as best as possible the values that are part of everyone’s life. A historic car also translates into this: restoring means not only reconditioning, but requires passion and competence (and maybe even a bit of budget available…).
The Automobile Club of Italy, a protagonist in the vintage vehicle sector with its derivative ACI Storico, wants to strengthen, with the presentation of the Charter of Principles, a specific interest in guaranteeing the conservation of rare specimens, cars that would otherwise be destroyed from time.
The Constitution
Moreover, article 9 of the Constitution of the Republic promotes the development of culture, scientific research, art and more, with the primary intention of encouraging future generations.
The “CARD” aims to be a decisive step in the conservation of the automotive heritage, a protection so that the historic cars continue to exist and circulate on Italian roads, showing how this heritage is destined to be part of global automotive culture.
The strategy
“It is a sector made up of enthusiasts who want to strive for perfection – said the president of the ACI, Angelo Sticchi Damiani – and in the last 90 years, always alongside the Mauto of Turin, we have already achieved important results, but we are convinced that much more can be done.”
For some time now, for example, those who wish have been given the opportunity to obtain the original documentation and license plate for their historic vehicle again, thanks to an initiative specifically promoted by the ACI.
The museum consortium
Furthermore, there is a consortium between the historic museums to further guarantee the conservation of these vehicles, from the Nicolis museum and the Mille Miglia museum, to the Macaluso Foundation – which conserves the racing cars, especially those that have won – in short to the historic of value which however remain the prerogative of a select few (economically).
Unlike other sector bodies, however, ACI Storico also allows vintage cars of lower value to participate in its events, and it is pleasant to see examples of Fiat 1,100, 1,500, 125 or spider 1200/1500, Alfa Romeo Giulia sedan, GT and spider, as well as Ford, Opel and many other brands that remind the more “dated” of their youth.
The art of restoration
However, creating culture also means carrying out a restoration by studying every detail, you must not just try to restore the bodywork and mechanical parts. Carrying out modifications, even improvements, distorts the originality of the vehicle and takes away the value it deserves.
First of all, however, it is important to preserve the vehicle, and this regardless of the category of the car, whether it is worth hundreds of thousands of euros or less than 10,000: passion and awareness are not measured only in terms of economical.
With the arrival of this Charter, a division into age classes is thus strengthened, from the Ancestors (from 1864 to the beginning of the twentieth century), then a class for each decade, from the 1910s to the 1970s, up to the Young ones, who however can have already more than 40 years.
