There are a few months left until the release of The Batman, coming in March next year, with Robert Pattinson who will take to the big screen a new version of the Gotham City crusader, but meanwhile the director Matt Reeves explained why the film will be separated from the rest of the Worlds of DC, the cinematic expanded universe dedicated to comic characters DC Comics.
The idea of a shared universe actually waned afterwards Justice League (which was followed by the version reflecting Zack Snyder’s original plans), with the characters receiving a stand-alone each, but without an apparent direction that can lead them all together to a new crossover.
This was further motivated by the manufacturer Dylan Clark, who during an interview with Pattinson and Reeves themselves talked about the application that Warner Bros. is making of its worlds, but it seems that combining this new version of Batman was not part of their plans.
Warner Bros has a multiverse that they’re exploring different ways to use characters… but we weren’t involved. Matt is interested in pushing this character into his emotional depths and shaking him to the core.
The Batman, in fact, will present us a Bruce Wayne in the first years of experience as a masked vigilante, moved by anger and revenge. But initially the plans were very different: when Ben Affleck was still on board, the film was expected to be part of the Worlds of DC.
However, due to his departure, the writers had more room to explore the whole thing. After Reeves arrived, there was a need to create a new version of the character with a more intimate aspect. Which, in the end, was done, leading the story to focus on the single rather than the choral, get away from the DC multiverse.
The more thriller-psychological nature of the film has been confirmed by the international trailer, in which Batman’s true identity will also play an important role in the villain’s plan.
