The militants of the Catalan National Assembly (ANC) have voted against promoting a massive abstention for the general elections on July 23. The decision supposes a corrective for the leadership of the independence entity, chaired by Dolors Feliu, who had positioned himself in favor of boycotting the elections with a general non-appearance at the polls or through a null vote. The ANC proposed to fill the ballot boxes with remaining ballots from the referendum of October 1, 2017, declared illegal. The ANC has reacted to the results with a statement in which it says it congratulates itself on the “constructive debate and the exercise of internal democracy” and affirms that it will remain “neutral” regarding the electoral option in the Spanish elections. The entity affirms that it will continue to position itself firmly in “the confrontation with the Spanish State.”
The ANC leadership had tried to promote electoral abstention to show discontent with the pro-independence parties “because of their inability to form a common front to block Madrid.” The electoral boycott proposal had generated division within the entity itself. A consultation was called for its partners so that, between June 30 and July 3, they could decide what position the ANC should show before the appointment with the polls. The wording of the question left few doubts about the position defended by the leadership: “Do you agree that in the Spanish elections of July 23 the Assembly promotes active abstention and the null political vote, with the yes ballot to the independence of October 1?
During the four days of open consultation, 3,773 members and partners have voted. 38.6% voted in the affirmative, while he did not prevail with more than 2,200, 59.7%.
