The latest heat wave triggers the records in the waters of the lagoon
The latest heat wave raised the temperature of the Mar Menor to record highs. According to a measurement of last Thursday, July 28, the waters of the lagoon reached an average of 31.25 degrees, the highest temperature recorded in a month of July since data are available. This was announced this Monday by the Scientific Committee of the Mar Menor at a press conference, where it was explained that the previous maximum temperatures recorded since 2016, thanks to the monitoring system, were 30.85 degrees on August 8, 2017 , 30.54 degrees on the same dates in 2018 and 30.22 degrees on July 20, 2022.
The spokesman for the advisory body, Emilio María Dolores, already warned on July 15 of the increase in indicators. “The temperature has risen in a remarkable way due to the episode of heat that we are having,” Dolores explained. “The maximum temperature that we have registered since 2016 is around 30.2 degrees in the first week of August,” he specified, a figure that has already been exceeded by one degree.
As for the rest of the parameters analysed, as of July 28, salinity amounts to 42.01 PSU, chlorophyll stands at 0.72 μg/l, average oxygenation is 5.99 mg/l and turbidity is of 1 FTU, as announced by the spokesman for the Scientific Committee of the Mar Menor.
As for the removal of biomass, the amount extracted from the lagoon so far this year amounts to 14,718 tons, thanks to the work of operators and fishermen. This has made it possible to eliminate 307 tons of nitrogen and 10.2 tons of phosphorus from the ecosystem, which represents 33.71 percent of what has been entered so far this year in the first case and an extra 44.14 percent for everything entered this year, in terms of phosphorus.
On the other hand, and in relation to the entry of water through the Rambla del Albujón, so far this year 61.88 percent more water has entered than in the same period of the previous year, now reaching 7.3 cubic hectometers, which has led to the entry of 22.98 percent more nitrates and three times more phosphorus.
