This Thursday morning, the Regional Assembly of Murcia hosted the presentation of the poster announcing the LXIII edition of the Minas de la Unión International Singing Festival, the work of the Catalan artist Jaume Plensa. The event was chaired by the president of the Regional Assembly, Visitación Martínez, the mayor of La Unión and president of the Cante de las Minas Foundation, Joaquín Zapata, and the director of Ica, Manuel Cebrián.
Visitación Martínez highlighted the fact that “for another year the Chamber will be the one to kick off the International Cante de las Minas Festival with the presentation of its advertising poster.” And she recalled that “what happens in the Cathedral of Cante every August has its ancient roots in the laments of the singers, who have become a true work of art in themselves.”
Likewise, the president encouraged everyone present “to join forces to support and promote any kind of artistic expression that contributes to the development of society, without losing sight of their tradition and roots.”
Finally, he thanked the organization and the poster artist of this XLIII edition for their “effort and dedication”, thanks to which “this festival has become one of the largest flamenco shows in the world.”
For his part, Joaquín Zapata valued the artist's work, recalling that “we have the immense privilege of having the most relevant Spanish artist of the moment, with a work that has been created thinking about the identity of the International Cante de las Minas Festival and that It is one of the most impressive and highest quality in its history. “It perfectly reflects the suffering of the mine and the effort and exact origin of the mining songs.”
The head that appears on the poster of the artist, Jaume Plesa, demonstrates how his first work in the Region of Murcia fits into his work. “I have worked a lot on the idea of the head and it seemed fantastic to capture it here, because it seems to me that the Cante de las Minas is based on the throat, on that magical moment in which we can articulate words and music, all at the same time, creating a state of mind. “I have captured a kind of very general darkness that can represent all of us,” said the artist. The letters have been inserted into the pads of old typefaces, making a nod to the first printed posters.
For the director of the ICA, «without a doubt, this sixty-third edition of the International Cante de las Minas Festival, which will take place between July 31 and August 10, continues to be surpassed. And thanks to this work of improvement, this festival is and will continue to be a sign of regional identity with great international impact. Because this festival is a vindication of what is ours, but also a celebration and a boost to talent.
The event ended with the performance of Encarnación Fernández, the only woman to win the 'Lámpara Minera' twice, who was accompanied on guitar by her son, Antonio Muñoz, also winner of one of the Festival's outstanding awards, the 'Bordón'. Miner'.
