The Russian Federation continues to work with Egypt on the implementation of Russian Mir payment cards, Russian Ambassador to Cairo Georgy Borisenko said on February 5.
“We are working with Egyptian partners so that Russian Mir cards can function and be accepted in Egypt,” he noted in a conversation with “RIA News”.
At the same time, the ambassador noted that this issue is not so simple and is related to the sanctions of Western countries against the Mir card operator company and Western threats to states and banks that are ready to accept such cards.
“Nevertheless, the work continues,” Borisenko said.
According to the ambassador, about 1.2 million Russians visited Egypt last year. “According to preliminary estimates, as far as we know, approximately 1.2 million Russian citizens visited Egypt last year. These are not record numbers. The record was set in 2014, when 3.3 million Russian citizens came to Egypt,” the ambassador emphasized.
Borisenko also shared that the Russian Federation is working with Egypt to overcome problems that hinder the growth of tourist flows.
Earlier, on January 16, First Deputy Chairman of the Bank of Russia Olga Skorobogatova noted that many countries want to organize the acceptance of Mir cards for citizens of the Russian Federation.
In November, Maxim Chirkov, associate professor of the Department of Economic Policy and Economic Measurements at the Institute of Economics and Finance of the State University of Management, said that the Russian national payment system has great prospects. According to him, Mir cards are an alternative to American payment card systems, since this system contains a huge number of transactions.
Mir cards are accepted in Cuba, Abkhazia, Armenia, Belarus, Vietnam, Kazakhstan, Venezuela and other countries.
