“The Adam Project” is the new science fiction movie from Netflix, where we see on screen three well-known actors among movie lovers: Mark Ruffalo, Jennifer Garner and Ryan Reynolds.
In the plot, Reynolds (Adam) plays a time-traveling pilot. He lands in 2022 and interacts with his 12 year old self. Both come together to save the Earth and his wife from the future, played by Zoe Saldaña. Garner and Ruffalo play the protagonist’s parents.

- Why did Adam travel through time?
Adam Reed (Reynolds) is on a mission to locate and rescue his wife, Laura (Zoe Saldana). This will cause him to go against the rules of Maya Sorian (Catherine Keener) in a dystopian 2050. He steals a jet and goes back in time to 2018 to find out what happened to Laura, but accidentally ends up in 2022, where he meets his true self. 12 years old (Walker Scobell).
Here we know what happened to Adam’s father: Louis (Mark Ruffalo) was the one who invented time travel, causing a chain reaction that led to a very bleak future for everyone, including Adam.

Future Adam realizes that he needs his younger self to fix his damaged ship, as the jet’s controls work by identifying the user’s DNA. While they work this out, Sorian and his team track the ship back in time.
- The logic of time travel
Adam brushes off as many questions as possible from his younger self and dismisses his knowledge of what a multiverse is, mocking him for watching too many movies. Here it is explained that Adam can absolutely change the future by traveling to the past.

Adam tells his young version that he met Laura when he was at the academy. He had been late for a conference and she offered to give him a ride. He fell madly in love with her. In the future, Laura had not returned from a time jump and Adam was informed that his plane broke down on the way back. He refused to believe it and discovered that his flight records were altered. Adam suspects that Sorian is involved.
Laura is alive and shows up in 2022. She has been in hiding for the past four years waiting for the older Adam to find her. She tells him that her mission went wrong after she started digging into the records. Someone was erasing the data of the past: it was Sorian.
Project Adam Ending Explained
As Louis and Adam set out to complete their mission, the Sorians intervene to prevent them from changing their future. Future Sorian threatens to kill young Adam, Louis tries to reason with her, and the villain breaks the electromagnetic seal containing the MPA.
Sorian tries to kill Louis and take the hard drive, but the bullet deflects into the MPA and kills his younger self. Louis is confused that both versions of his son still linger in the past when they too should have disappeared.

Louis knows that he will die and refuses to listen to information that would save his life, as he feels guilty about changing the future through time travel. He takes advantage of the little time he has left to reconcile with his children.
Future Adam tells his young self that he should take the time to appreciate his mother and realizes that his own efforts to escape the memories of his youth were futile.
As early as 2022, present-day Adam forges a more loving relationship with Ellie, his mother. As time went on we discovered that Laura was right to hope that she and Adam would still meet and fall in love in the future. As she said, her whole love story repeats itself.
